Authorities have identified Tyler James Robinson, 22, as the man in custody for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
Robinson, a Utah native, was arrested on September 12 after his father recognized him in surveillance images released by investigators. According to CBS News, Robinson’s father urged him to surrender before contacting a family friend who alerted local law enforcement—an intervention authorities described as decisive in ending a nationwide manhunt.
At a press briefing, the FBI confirmed Robinson’s arrest but declined to comment on his political views or possible motives. “We are confident we have the right individual in custody, but we are still working to establish the full picture of who he is and why he acted,” a spokesperson said.

Public records show Robinson previously registered as an unaffiliated voter in Utah. He was not enrolled at Utah Valley University, the site of the attack, but was a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College. He had earlier attended Utah State University in 2021 and earned credits through Utah Tech University while in high school.
Robinson’s parents, Matthew Carl and Amber Denise Robinson, are registered Republicans. His father runs a countertop and cabinet installation business, while his mother works as a social worker. The family is known to be active in the Mormon church.

Investigators revealed that Robinson was deeply immersed in online culture. Several bullet casings linked to the case carried inscriptions referencing internet memes, trolling humor, and anti-fascist symbolism. One casing bore the words “notices bulges OwO what’s this?”—a phrase associated with internet “copypasta.” Another read “Hey fascist! Catch!” alongside arrow symbols commonly used by anti-fascist groups.
Authorities also disclosed that Robinson was active on Discord, where his roommate reportedly showed messages from a contact named “Tyler” discussing a rifle “drop point” and concealment tactics. Discord has since suspended his account, citing violations of its off-platform behavior policy.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson’s family told investigators he had become “more political” in recent years. During a dinner before the attack, Robinson allegedly spoke critically of Kirk’s upcoming event at Utah Valley University.
