Urban roads responsible for traffic light repairs – Bolga MCE clarifies

Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Roland Atanga Ayoo, has clarified that the municipal assembly is not responsible for repairing the town’s faulty traffic lights, despite growing public criticism.

Speaking on Dreamz Breakfast Today, Mr. Ayoo explained that the installations were carried out by a contractor under the Department of Urban Roads, not the assembly.

“The traffic lights are not installed by the assembly. Take me by my words. They were not and are not the duty of the assembly to install them,” he stressed, addressing what he described as a long-standing public misunderstanding.

Residents of Bolgatanga have expressed frustration over the prolonged breakdown of traffic lights, which they say poses serious risks to road safety and contributes to traffic congestion. Many have blamed both past and present MCEs for failing to resolve the issue.

Mr. Ayoo, however, insisted that his office has no direct control over repairs, revealing that the contractor responsible for the installations is based in Accra, though originally from Wa in the Upper West Region.

“The traffic lights are under Urban Roads, and that contract was awarded by Urban Roads to one contractor. Anytime there is a breakdown, it’s the same contractor we are tracing, and we are still making efforts to reach him,” he explained.

He assured residents that his administration is in touch with Urban Roads to ensure the contractor restores the traffic lights, but urged the public to direct their complaints to the appropriate authority.

“People have the right to complain, but we must know where to direct our complaints to,” Mr. Ayoo noted, while emphasizing his commitment to working with Urban Roads to address the problem.
