UE/R: Sung Bie’la Foundation targets literacy gap with ‘Catch Them Young’ reading clubs in Garu

The Sung Bie’la Foundation Ghana, famed for its grassroots empowerment projects, has launched a bold new literacy initiative to tackle declining reading culture among children in the Garu District.

In partnership with Adwinsa Publications, the foundation introduced the “Catch Them Young Reading Clubs” on World Literacy Day under the theme “Read, Think, Empower, and Achieve.” The program is designed to ignite a love for books among pupils, particularly in rural and marginalised communities.

“When we teach our children to write, we teach a nation to think,” said Hajia Zenabu Awinbe Salifu, Founder of Sung Bie’la Foundation. “A writing child becomes a reading adult. A reading adult becomes a responsible citizen.”

Education stakeholders hailed the move as timely and transformative. Garu District Education Director, Philip Frederick Alale, praised the foundation for supplying reading materials and establishing clubs in local schools, stressing that literacy is the key to lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.

School leaders also voiced optimism. At Suma Duuri Primary School, Headmistress Ndego Akuka Patricia noted that many pupils struggle with reading, but expressed confidence that the new clubs will nurture a stronger learning culture.

District Chief Executive, John Abare, said the initiative would help counter waning interest in reading caused by peer influence and digital distractions, while reigniting passion for books among children.

The launch adds to Sung Bie’la Foundation’s record of impactful interventions—from supporting widows and teenage mothers to empowering rural communities. This latest step, however, marks a direct investment in the minds of the future.

By bridging the literacy gap, the foundation hopes to create not just strong readers, but empowered citizens capable of transforming society.
