This is a very sad day – Afenyo-Markin officially informs Speaker about death of Akwatia MP

The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has officially been informed about the sudden death of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Delivering the somber news on the floor of the House, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed deep sorrow and reluctance, saying,

“Mr. Speaker, this is a very sad day. I break this unfortunate news with a lot of regret and a lot of hesitation, but it is my duty to be the bearer of it.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Akwatia, describing the loss as a significant blow to the country and to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), where Kumi had been considered a promising force for the future.

Ernest Yaw Kumi, aged 40, was one of the rising young politicians in the NPP.

He clinched the Akwatia seat during the 2024 general elections with 19,269 votes, defeating his closest contender, Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured 17,206 votes.

His victory followed an equally competitive internal contest in 2023, where he successfully unseated incumbent Ama Sey in the NPP primaries, signaling a fresh chapter of leadership in the Akwatia constituency.

News of his passing, reportedly following a short illness, has stunned both sides of the political divide.
