Talensi DCE empowers persons with disabilities with 102 sheep

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, has disbursed 102 sheep to 51 members of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

Each beneficiary received two female sheep under the initiative, which is designed to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, Mr. Nabwomya said the gesture aims to create income-generating avenues for PWDs to enhance their livelihoods.

“What you have just witnessed here is a handover of livestock to people living with disabilities of whatever kind, for them to also improve upon their livelihood. These animals are meant for them to rear. That’s how they can also help themselves,” he explained.

The DCE emphasized that the distribution process was supervised by leaders of the GFD to ensure fairness. He further assured that the Assembly remains committed to supporting PWDs to become self-reliant.

The initiative, funded through the Disability Common Fund, is part of ongoing efforts to reduce dependency among PWDs in Talensi and empower them with practical resources.

Clement Sampana, President of the Federation in the district, explained that the support package is tailored to individual needs, covering livestock, sewing machines, pumping machines, fridges, and trade-related equipment.

“The disability fund is a grant, not a loan. Beneficiaries are not expected to pay back. It is meant to empower them to generate small incomes for their upkeep,” Mr. Sampana clarified.

He noted that beneficiaries undergo sensitization before receiving support, while monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure accountability. Outstanding beneficiaries who make good use of the resources will also receive further assistance in the future.

One of the beneficiaries, Badembanoya Lockre, could not hide his excitement as he received his share of two sheep. On behalf of his colleagues, he expressed gratitude to the DCE and the GFD leadership, promising that they would take proper care of the livestock to sustain the initiative.

The disbursement is expected to continue in the coming days, offering renewed hope and empowerment to PWDs across the Talensi District.
