Sirigu marks decade of leadership with historic launch of Azuko festival

The Sirigu Traditional Area in Ghana’s Upper East Region has launched two landmark cultural events—the 10th anniversary of the enskinment of Paramount Chief Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III and the maiden Azuko Festival, set for December 2025.

Announced during a colourful durbar filled with traditional music, dance, and displays of cultural pride, the occasion brought together chiefs, queen mothers, youth groups, and residents in a united celebration of Sirigu’s heritage and development journey.

Speaking on behalf of the chief, Stanislaus Nsoh Nyaaba highlighted the joint launch as a defining moment for the community.

“This joint launch heralds a season of reflection, unity, and cultural celebration. These two events stand as pillars of pride for the good people of Sirigu,” he declared.

The theme, “A Decade of Leadership, Unity, and Development,” underscores the chief’s commitment to peace, cultural preservation, and progress over the past ten years.

Paramount Chief Naba Akwara III, in his remarks, expressed deep appreciation to those who have supported his reign:

“Our journey has been one of peace, humility, and the collective pursuit of development,” he said, acknowledging the role of the gods, elders, queen mothers, youth, and partner institutions.

The Azuko Festival, named after Sirigu’s revered ancestor believed to have migrated from Burkina Faso, will celebrate the roots of the community while aiming to boost tourism and economic growth.

“Azuko was a seed of courage, vision, and unity,” the chief noted, describing the festival as a tribute to their founding values.

Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Atanga Akamugri, praised the chief’s decade of service, commending his dedication to education, peacebuilding, and women’s empowerment.
