Kigali has taken a bold step into the future of transportation as Rwanda launched Africa’s first public flight of a self-flying electric air taxi during the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit.
The groundbreaking demonstration featured the EHang EH216-S, a pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, wowing aviation experts, investors, and regulators gathered in the capital.
“Today, for the first time in Africa, a self-flying air taxi has taken to the skies,” President Paul Kagame announced. “We are very happy to be part of this demonstration and look forward to seeing what comes next.”
The showcase, a collaboration between Rwanda and the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), cements the country’s reputation as a continental trailblazer in aviation technology. Rwanda hopes the innovation will ease urban traffic congestion, link remote areas, and promote eco-friendly transport solutions.
Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore said the historic flight reflects Rwanda’s vision for smarter, more connected cities. “By collaborating on this historic flight, we are not only showcasing the future of aviation but also demonstrating our dedication to fostering a safe, progressive regulatory environment for advanced air mobility,” he stated.
The pilotless air taxi, built by Chinese drone maker EHang, can cruise at 100 km/h, reach a top speed of 130 km/h, and cover 35 km in a 21-minute flight.
Rwanda’s embrace of the technology follows its earlier success in pioneering drone delivery services, now serving as a springboard for investment into advanced air mobility markets.
“We are proud to support Rwanda’s vision of becoming a pioneer in aviation technology,” said Huang Qilin, Director General of CRBC Rwanda.
With this historic flight, Rwanda has positioned itself not just as a participant, but as a leader in shaping Africa’s aviation future.
