Prof. Alidu Seidu files nomination to contest Tamale Central by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Tamale Central, Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu, has officially submitted his nomination forms to the Electoral Commission ahead of the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Prof. Seidu’s candidacy comes on the back of a decisive victory in the NDC primaries held on September 6 at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, where he polled 840 votes out of 1,511. His closest rival, Abdul Hannan Gundado, garnered 536 votes, cementing Prof. Seidu’s place as the party’s choice to retain the seat.

Meanwhile, reports from Channel One TV indicate that aspirants from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) have also picked up nomination forms but are yet to formally file them. The September 10 deadline remains the cut-off for all interested candidates.

The Tamale Central by-election was necessitated by the untimely passing of the sitting MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. His death has left the constituency in mourning, with the upcoming poll expected to be a closely watched contest.

Political observers note that the NDC will be keen on maintaining its stronghold in Tamale Central, while smaller parties may seek to capitalize on voter sympathy and shifting dynamics following Dr. Murtala’s demise.
