A Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has issued a stark warning about the state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing its current leadership of presiding over what he describes as a “collapse of party discipline.”
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 23, Dr. Asante Otchere expressed grave concern over growing internal divisions and public outbursts among party members, especially in the aftermath of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“There is too much indiscipline within the NPP. The national executives do not have the wherewithal to hold the centre. And that is the more reason why here and there you have people throwing tantrums,” he stated.
According to the political analyst, the apparent lack of control by the national executives is fueling disunity and public disagreements within the party, which has left the NPP appearing fractured and rudderless.
His comments come amid escalating tensions within the party, with key figures openly criticizing one another and challenging the direction of the NPP in recent weeks.
Dr. Asante Otchere further suggested that the party’s decision to elect a flagbearer earlier than usual may be a strategic attempt to restore cohesion and re-establish a chain of command.
“I believe that is the more reason why they wanted to conduct this early national election—to elect a presidential candidate so that once you have your leader, then everybody will fall in line and then discipline along the line will come up,” he explained.
He emphasized that without strong leadership and a unified front, the NPP risks deeper internal fragmentation that could undermine its chances in future political contests.
The remarks add to the growing calls for introspection and reform within the NPP as it attempts to regroup and rebuild ahead of the 2028 elections.
