Former Vice-President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state power to intimidate and harass members of the New Patriotic Party.
Speaking in an interview, Dr Bawumia condemned what he described as a pattern of politically motivated arrests, urging the NDC-led government to rein in security agencies and stop treating opponents as enemies of the state.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job… The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he warned.
The NPP presidential candidate hopeful cited recent incidents in which operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) allegedly attempted to arrest a sitting Member of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, at his home — a move he described as “unfortunate political persecution.”
The NPP has publicly condemned what it calls a rising wave of political persecution under the NDC government, pointing to arrests and detentions of its members as evidence of electoral intimidation and compromised democratic norms.
Dr Bawumia called on President John Dramani Mahama to personally intervene and restrain state security actors, warning that Ghana must not descend into “an atmosphere of fear and arbitrary action by state agencies.”
The accusations add to growing concerns about political polarization and the misuse of security institutions ahead of upcoming elections. Whether the government will respond remains to be seen.
