Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured journalists of maximum safety as preparations intensify for the September 2 Akwatia by-election.
Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra, the IGP stressed that the Police Service is committed to protecting the media while they discharge their duties.
“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you. It is our duty to protect you,” Mr. Yohuno stated firmly.
The reassurance comes in the wake of recent concerns over attacks on journalists, notably the assault of a GHOne TV reporter by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 17. Mr. Yohuno emphasized that such incidents will not be repeated, noting that safeguarding media personnel is a top priority.
Meanwhile, political campaigns in Akwatia are heating up. The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, has dismissed rumors branding him a school dropout.
Addressing supporters during a unity walk on August 17, he insisted he has tertiary-level education in Human Resource Management, equipping him to manage the constituency effectively.
“Whoever says I am not educated and well-equipped to lead Akwatia is lying. I studied human resource management and that is not studied in class four,” Asumadu declared to cheering party faithful.
As the by-election draws closer, both security assurances and political messaging are expected to play a crucial role in shaping voter confidence in Akwatia.
