In a swift response to escalating violence in parts of the Upper East and North East Regions, the government has commenced the evacuation of students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and nearby conflict-prone areas.
A statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday, July 27, 2025, confirmed the move, with Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, describing the evacuation as part of “urgent measures to protect students who have become vulnerable amidst the ongoing conflict.”
“Further to the statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior announcing the imposition of a curfew in Bawku, Nalerigu and its environs, government wants to stress that… the curfew is intended to create an environment conducive to the evacuation of all students in various educational institutions in affected areas, some of whom have been unfortunately targeted in the conflict,” the statement read.
The curfew, which took effect from 2pm to 6am daily, was initially meant to curb tensions and enforce peace.
However, government sources now confirm that it is strategically designed to aid the safe and orderly withdrawal of students from volatile zones.
This intervention follows growing public concern after reports surfaced that students had been targeted in recent attacks linked to the long-standing Bawku conflict.
The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting every Ghanaian, especially the young and vulnerable, as it works toward restoring calm and lasting peace in the affected regions.
