Chaos at Ernest Kumi’s Memorial: NDC delegation nearly attacked

A delegation from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was met with hostility during the one-week observance of late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

According to NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, the incident occurred at the Akyem Wenchi funeral grounds, where the team had gone to commiserate with the bereaved family. While some mourners warmly received them, others booed and allegedly attempted to attack members of the delegation.

“The National Chairman, myself, the National Organiser, the Deputy Communications Officer, and Regional Executives were present. Unfortunately, the warm reception given to our chairman provoked some individuals who then sought to launch an attack,” Gbande told Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

He described the hostility as a troubling signal ahead of the Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.

Gbande, however, noted that Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, alongside some traditional leaders, later apologized to the NDC team.

A video of the confrontation has since surfaced on social media, sparking debate.

The memorial, themed My Hero Lives On, brought together family, friends, political figures, and community members to mourn the late lawmaker, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at age 40. He is survived by his wife and children.
