Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to appear before the High Court in Accra today, October 7, 2025, to answer charges relating to illegal mining.
The outspoken politician, who also owns Akonta Mining Company Limited, has been slapped with three mining-related charges, including mining without a license and other allied offences.
On Monday, October 6, 2025, Chairman Wontumi reported to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Accra, where he was formally charged. He was subsequently granted bail of GH¢1 million with two sureties, conditions which were met before his release.
Speaking to journalists after the CID appearance, his lead counsel, Hon. Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the charges, stressing that his client remains composed and confident as he heads to court.
“The charges are related to mining. Wontumi has been charged with mining without a license and other related offences. Chairman has been well composed and is expecting that tomorrow when we go to court, all of us will help the court in taking a decision that is judicious,” Appiah-Kubi stated.
Today’s court proceedings are expected to draw significant public and media attention, given Wontumi’s influence in the NPP and his controversial role in the country’s small-scale mining sector.
