A dramatic scene unfolded at the Akwatia Lorry Polling Station during Tuesday’s by-election when a heated altercation broke out between the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) First National Vice Chairman, Awudu Sofo Azoka, and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Third National Vice Chairman, Osman Masawudu.
The scuffle erupted while voting was underway after Masawudu mentioned Azoka’s name during a live interview at the polling station. Eyewitness reports indicate that Azoka, who was nearby, cautioned his political rival against repeatedly invoking his name. What initially appeared to be light banter quickly escalated into a fiery exchange that nearly resulted in fisticuffs.
Supporters accompanying both men reportedly joined the confrontation, heightening tensions at the polling station. However, swift intervention by police personnel prevented the situation from spiraling further out of control and restored calm.
Eyewitness noted that the clash underscored the charged atmosphere surrounding the Akwatia by-election, where both the NPP and NDC are fiercely contesting the seat.
The Electoral Commission has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but security remains on high alert as voting continues.
