Akwatia by-election: Police ban motorbikes within 100m from polling stations

The Ghana Police Service has directed that motorbikes must stay at least 100 metres away from polling centres during the September 2, 2025, by-election in Akwatia.

Director-General of Operations, COP Vance Baba Gariba, announced the measure at a media briefing on Friday, August 29, saying it is designed to ensure a free, fair, and violence-free exercise.

“We may not infringe on people’s rights by stopping them from riding, but motorbikes will only be allowed 100 metres away from polling stations. We will also not encourage pillion riders during this period,” COP Gariba stressed.

He further revealed that 5,500 police personnel have been deployed across the constituency—not to intimidate voters, but to safeguard them.

According to him, officers will engage directly with communities to allay fears and encourage residents to turn out in their numbers to vote.
