Friday rainstorm rips off Bungu junior high school roofs in Bongo District

Heavy rains that lashed the Bongo District on Friday have left a trail of destruction, unroofing school buildings and damaging properties across several communities.

Among the worst-hit institutions are Bungu Junior High School and Zorko Kodorigo JHS, whose roofs were ripped off, leaving classrooms exposed and disrupting academic activities.

The downpour, accompanied by strong winds, not only displaced school infrastructure but also affected homes and personal belongings, deepening the vulnerability of already struggling communities.

District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, Hon. Joseph Akasake Abaah, visited the affected schools to assess the damage. In an interview with News Net Gh, he assued the public that urgent measures would be taken to restore the school buildings.

“We are deeply concerned about the impact of this rainstorm. I want to assure parents, teachers, and pupils that the Assembly will take immediate steps to reroof the affected schools and ensure that learning resumes as soon as possible,” he stated.

The DCE further called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant stakeholders to support affected households and help the district recover quickly from the devastation.

The incident adds to a growing list of rainstorm-related damages across northern Ghana, as climate change continues to intensify the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.

Community members have also appealed for long-term solutions, including the use of reinforced roofing materials and proactive disaster preparedness, to mitigate future occurrences.
