The High Court in Accra has discharged former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwasi Nyantakyi, and former Northern Regional GFA representative, Abdulai Alhassan, after the prosecution failed to produce ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in court for trial to commence.
The two were facing charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and corruption following a 2018 exposé by Anas and his Tiger Eye P.I. team, which captured them in an alleged bribery scandal.
However, after multiple adjournments, the prosecution was unable to present Anas, a key witness in the case, leading the court to discharge the accused persons.
Nyantakyi, once a powerful figure in African football, was forced to resign from his GFA position and faced a lifetime FIFA ban (later reduced to 15 years) following the exposé.
His co-accused, Abdulai Alhassan, also resigned as Northern Regional FA boss.
Despite the court’s decision, legal experts suggest the case could be revived if the prosecution secures Anas’ testimony.
Meanwhile, Nyantakyi and Alhassan maintain their innocence, with their lawyers criticizing the delay in prosecution.
