Residents of Nkawkaw Zongo in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region have been thrown into fear and panic following a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of three Fulani men.
The victims — Mohammed Wanto (47), Abubakari Abdallah (57), and Abubakar Mohammed (56) — were ambushed by unknown masked gunmen at their usual gathering spot, a veterinary shop near Nkawkaw Zongo Barracks, on the evening of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, around 8:00 p.m.
Eyewitnesses reported that two men died instantly, while the third initially escaped but was pursued and fatally shot shortly after. During the attack, a young boy sustained serious gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.
The brazen nature of the shooting in a public place has left residents terrified, prompting many to flee the area that night. Calls for urgent government intervention are growing louder, with community members demanding either relocation of the Fulani community or enhanced security to prevent further violence.
Halidu Tamimu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, has assured residents that measures are underway to strengthen security.
The Assembly is collaborating with the Minister for Communication, Sam George, and the CEO of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Richard Karikari Kevor, to install CCTV cameras along the Zongo–Akuajoo stretch to monitor activities and deter criminals.
The Nkawkaw Central Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killings. Although the attackers remain unidentified, police say they are pursuing multiple leads to determine the motive and apprehend those responsible.
The tragic incident has heightened tensions in Nkawkaw Zongo as residents anxiously await swift justice and restored peace.
