The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has expressed reservations about the government’s decision to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to Dr. Mahama, ECG holds significant potential and, if efficiently managed, could generate substantial revenue for the state.
He cautioned the government against rushing the process, suggesting it could undermine public trust.
In a social media post, Dr. Mahama aligned with the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), stating:
“I agree with PUWU and think this is a premature move to sell off a state asset with huge prospects for operational and financial turnaround.
The NDC is abusing the overwhelming support of Ghanaians, assuming they can proceed unchecked. The government should hasten with caution.”
However, Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has defended the privatization plan, arguing that it aims to enhance ECG’s operational efficiency and improve power distribution nationwide.
