Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has called for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s Free Zones laws to align with current global trends and better promote exports.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, Ofosu-Adjare described the Free Zones Concept Act 504 of 1995 as outdated and ill-suited for today’s economic landscape.
“Free Zones are essential for export promotion, but our legal framework needs to be updated to reflect modern realities,” she stated, pledging to work with the Free Zones Authority and Parliament to overhaul the legislation.
She emphasized the need for a dynamic and robust legal structure to support both single-factory operations and enclave developments under the Free Zones programme.
“Law evolves with time, and so must our policies. This law is outmoded. I will ensure we amend it to meet current demands and drive Ghana’s export agenda,” Ofosu-Adjare added.
The Minister-Designate reaffirmed her commitment to reforming the Free Zones sector to position it as a critical driver of the country’s economic growth.
