Morning show host of Onua TV, Captain Smart, has responded to criticism following the deaths of youth attempting to invade AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine.
Speaking on the controversy, Captain Smart dismissed claims that his comments in the circulating video sparked the incident. He clarified that the video, in which he called on Obuasi youth to rise against perceived injustices by the mining company, was recorded in June 2023.
“I don’t owe anyone an explanation, but let me make it clear: the video being shared is old, from 2023. People are twisting the narrative to suggest I made those remarks recently, which is false,” he stated.
Captain Smart emphasized his influence in media and expressed confidence in his work. “I know my words carry weight, but this situation has been misrepresented,” he added.
Background
The controversy arose after seven youth were killed by Ghana Armed Forces personnel during a clash while attempting to enter AngloGold Ashanti’s mine. Critics, including journalist Vim Lady, accused Captain Smart of inciting the attack through his remarks in the video.
In the video, Captain Smart urged the youth to reclaim resources from the mine, criticizing the government and AngloGold Ashanti for what he described as exploitation.
“Obuasi youth must rise! Attack the mine and take what belongs to you,” he declared in the clip.
The resurfaced video has sparked a nationwide debate, with some defending Captain Smart’s remarks as old and unrelated to the recent events, while others blame his rhetoric for fueling tension.
