In response to President John Dramani Mahama’s directive, Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has initiated an investigation into the election-related deaths that occurred in 2020 and 2024. According to the Chronicle Newspaper, Dr. Dampare has set up a specialized investigative team at the CID Headquarters, led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe
The team, comprised of highly skilled and experienced officers of the Ghana Police Service, has been given specific timelines to complete the investigation and submit their report to the IGP. Dr. Dampare has assured the President that all necessary resources will be made available to the team to ensure a thorough and effective investigation.
Notably, the investigative team’s work will build upon the foundation laid by Dr. Dampare and his team since 2021. Upon assuming office, Dr. Dampare established the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters, which has been instrumental in investigating unresolved crime-related matters. The unit has already made significant progress in the case involving the 2020 election-related deaths, with some suspects currently facing prosecution.
President Mahama’s letter to the IGP, dated January 10, 2025, directed the investigation into the election-related deaths, prompting Dr. Dampare’s swift response. The move is seen as a positive step towards ensuring justice and accountability for the victims and their families.
