IGP Dampare forms a special committee to probe election deaths

Civil society organizations and religious bodies have commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for taking decisive steps to enhance election security.

The IGP has set up a Special Investigative Team at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to investigate deaths linked to the 2020 and 2024 elections, following a directive from President John Mahama.

According to The Chronicle, the team, led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, comprises highly skilled and experienced officers.

Dr. Dampare assured the President that the team would be fully resourced to meet its objectives within a set timeline.

The initiative builds on previous work by the police under Dampare’s leadership, including efforts by the Cold Case Unit established in 2021 to resolve unresolved crimes.

The Cold Case Unit has reportedly made significant progress in investigating the 2020 election-related deaths, with some suspects already facing prosecution.

President Mahama’s directive, issued on January 10, 2025, underscores the need for justice and accountability in addressing these election-related incidents.
