Gambia: Mahama demands justice for 2005 Massacre victims

Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called for justice for the victims of the 2005 massacre in The Gambia, which claimed the lives of about 56 West African migrants, predominantly Ghanaians.

The incident, often referred to as “The Gambia Massacre,” involved killings carried out by Gambian security forces under the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.

During his official visit to The Gambia over the weekend, Mr. Mahama urged the international community to support efforts to compensate the victims’ families and ensure justice for the atrocities.

“We have been following the truth and reconciliation processes, and we believe they will help address the pain endured during the undemocratic era,” he said.

He further emphasized the need to hold perpetrators accountable, stating, “There are additional steps required, including bringing those responsible to justice. Ghanaians were among the victims, and some of our countrymen lost their lives.”
