Mahama swears in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s 16th Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jubilee House in Accra on Sunday, November 17, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s judiciary.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie becomes Ghana’s 16th Chief Justice, succeeding Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, who was directed in April to step aside for investigations to be conducted.

Prior to his formal appointment, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had been serving as Acting Chief Justice—an experience that introduced him to the demands of the role and set the stage for his elevation.

His path to the top judicial office included a rigorous vetting process before Parliament, during which he demonstrated deep knowledge of the law and outlined his vision for strengthening Ghana’s justice system.

Parliament approved his nomination on Thursday, November 13, through a head count that recorded 163 Majority MPs in favour and 69 Minority MPs participating in the vote.

Following the approval, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin urged the new Chief Justice to reflect on the journey leading up to his appointment.

“I urge the nominee to take all that has been happening, from the nomination to the approval, into consideration in his tenure of office,” the Speaker said.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie now steps into the role with the responsibility of leading judicial reforms, improving public trust in the courts, and ensuring the efficient administration of justice across the country.
