Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, has refuted claims that the Akufo-Addo administration left behind a mismanaged economy.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, November 10, Mrs. Osei Asare defended the government’s economic record, citing what she described as solid fiscal performance despite global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to her, key economic indicators at the time of exit in 2024 reflected prudent management rather than chaos.
“Every era and what really describes it, but in 2022, inflation was 54%. When we were leaving office in 2024, we reduced it by 23.8%. We inherited a growth rate of 3.6% but left it at 5.7%. In 2016, GDP was around 219 billion, and we reached 1 trillion GDP,” she stated.
Mrs. Osei Asare emphasized that such progress could not be the result of economic mismanagement. “For no reason can anybody say that they inherited a mismanaged economy,” she insisted.
Her comments come in response to recent statements from members of the Mahama administration, who have accused the Akufo-Addo government of reckless spending and poor economic stewardship.
The former Deputy Finance Minister maintained that the government’s policies cushioned the nation through turbulent global economic conditions, stressing that Ghana’s fundamentals remained strong when they handed over power.
