UE/R: Police urge families to identify unclaimed bodies before mass burial

The Upper East Regional Police Command has issued an urgent public appeal for families to help identify unclaimed bodies at the Upper East Regional Hospital morgue before a scheduled mass burial takes place.

In a press release signed by Chief Inspector Abdul Rahman Sumaila of the Public Affairs Unit, the police disclosed that the hospital is preparing to dispose of unidentified bodies that have been kept in the morgue for extended periods due to limited storage space.

“The general public is entreated to come to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital to identify and take the dead bodies of their beloved ones before the mass burial,” the statement read.

The police emphasized that the appeal is a final opportunity for families who may have missing relatives to visit the hospital and claim their loved ones for proper burial in line with their cultural and traditional practices.

Authorities explained that the decision follows growing concerns over morgue congestion and the need to ensure public health safety.

In a related advisory, the command urged residents to carry valid national identification cards whenever they leave their homes. This, according to the police, will help in quick identification in the unfortunate event of accidents or sudden deaths, reducing cases of unclaimed bodies.

Families and relatives searching for missing persons have been encouraged to visit the Upper East Regional Hospital morgue in Bolgatanga immediately to check for possibles identification before the planned mass burial is carried out.

The police assured the public of continued collaboration with the hospital and local authorities to ensure the process is handled with dignity and respect for the deceased.
