Minority demands swift, lasting action to end Bawku conflict

The Minority in Parliament is pressing the government to take urgent and comprehensive action to resolve the protracted conflict in Bawku, warning that the situation could further deteriorate without meaningful intervention.

In a passionate appeal on behalf of the caucus, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, criticized what he called “piecemeal” approaches to the crisis.

He called for a strategy that addresses deep-rooted issues such as poverty, inequality, and limited access to education and healthcare.

“The government must act now to restore calm and prevent further deterioration of the situation in Bawku,” Rev. Fordjour emphasized. “A lasting solution lies in a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of the conflict.”

The Minority is advocating for active engagement with local communities and stakeholders in designing a peace and development strategy that fosters both stability and long-term growth in the region.

Their call aligns with recent discussions at the United Nations Security Council’s “Silencing the Guns in Africa” forum, where global leaders stressed the importance of African-led, inclusive solutions backed by investment in human development.

The Minority believes that such an approach would not only bring lasting peace to Bawku but also affirm Ghana’s role as a beacon of peace and progress on the continent.
