President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to equitable development across Ghana, pledging that all 16 regions will directly benefit from the Big Push infrastructure programme.
Speaking at the official launch of the initiative at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday, September 16, President Mahama described the Big Push as a transformative national project aimed at modernising road networks, strengthening inter-regional connectivity, and stimulating economic growth.
“From January 7, we have been designing road projects across the length and breadth of the country. The Big Push touches all 16 regions. Every region is going to benefit from its share of the programme,” he assured.
The President noted that the programme would also enhance accessibility between district capitals. “We have 261 districts in Ghana, and we believe neighbouring districts should have good roads connecting their capitals,” he added.
President Mahama cautioned against the infiltration of unqualified contractors into the project, stressing that only competent and experienced firms would be engaged. “There are a few wheelbarrow contractors who have come to me saying, ‘Oh, I hear they are distributing projects under the Big Push. I want one.’ I say, ‘My friend, this is not for wheelbarrow contractors,’” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
He further explained that many qualified local and international contractors already engaged in ongoing works would be key partners in delivering the projects efficiently. In addition, some previously awarded contracts have been repackaged under the programme to ensure timely execution.
The Big Push programme, according to government, is expected to not only improve Ghana’s transport infrastructure but also create jobs and drive economic development across the country.
