Awineyesma Abiire, a lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from pressuring Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Minister Designate for the Upper East Region, to prioritize party interests over regional development.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr. Abiire emphasized the importance of allowing Mr. Akamugri to use his decades of experience to drive development in the region.
He cautioned against party members insisting that the nominee focus solely on satisfying the NDC’s base at the expense of the region’s progress.
Mr. Akamugri’s nomination is rooted in his over 30 years of dedicated service to the NDC, including 27 years as the party’s regional secretary, making him the longest-serving national executive member.
Mr. Abiire urged the nominee to prioritize peace and development in the region while navigating the challenges of governance.
“He must be ready for the pressure for development, but the party must understand that he now governs the entire region. His focus should be on translating the same dedication that strengthened the NDC in the Upper East Region into effective governance,” he said.
Highlighting Mr. Akamugri’s role in keeping the region a stronghold for the NDC despite the efforts of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Abiire added, “He should be given the peace of mind to bring his expertise to benefit the entire region, ensuring that all residents feel the impact of his leadership.”
