Nigerian actor Uzor Arukwe has opened up about his breakthrough performance in the movie Sugar Rush and his journey in the entertainment industry during an interview with filmmaker and TV host Chude Jideonwo.
Arukwe credited his rise to prominence to his portrayal of a comical yet captivating character in Sugar Rush. Chude lauded Arukwe’s ability to elevate the role beyond its comedic nature, saying, “You took a character that could be dismissed as comical and made it present. People couldn’t take their eyes off it. Instead of being just funny, audiences recognized your talent as a great actor.”
Reflecting on his dedication to acting, Arukwe said, “I’m very passionate about this craft. Anyone who knows me knows I’ve always taken it seriously, whether it’s stage or film.”
Arukwe revealed that landing the Sugar Rush role felt like divine intervention. He recalled scrolling through Instagram late one night and seeing cast members Bimbo Ademoye, Bisola Aiyeola, and Adesua Etomi in a yet-to-be-released movie. “I prayed and asked, ‘God, when will I be in films like this?’” The very next morning, he received a missed call from filmmaker Jade Osiberu, offering him a role in the same movie. “I did a happy dance and thought, ‘Is this how God answers prayers?’”
Despite appearing in only a few scenes, Arukwe’s performance earned widespread acclaim, including recognition from a Hollywood actor who described it as one of the film’s standout moments. “That validation was surreal and affirming,” he shared.
Arukwe also spoke about his transition from the corporate world to acting, revealing that he spent a decade in corporate jobs before deciding to fully embrace his passion. “I prayed for a sign, and then Sugar Rush happened. Around the same time, I was nominated for AMVCA twice. That was the confirmation I needed.
