The Minority leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin is calling for the government to establish a hospital for Members of Parliament and the construction of a new parliamentary chamber.
But this proposal has been met with opposition from some MPs including the MP for Bawku Central and Majority leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga.
Hon. Afenyo -Markin made this proposal during the swearing-in of the Parliamentary Service Board on Monday, March 17.
He suggested that, Members of Parliament are in a political class and would require special healthcare facilities to cater for their medical needs instead of flying outside the country to seek proper healthcare.
The minority leader added that, “If it does happen in accordance with our vision, it will be a great aspect since we are in the political class and our health issues are to be known within certain confines.”
However, Hon. Mahama Ayariga rejected the proposals, citing Ghana’s struggling economy as a reason why such projects would be should not be a top priorities at this time.
He insisted that given the pressing economic challenges facing the country, a new chamber and a hospital for members of parliament were not priorities now.
