Navrongo mason jailed 15 months for stealing GH₵195K worth of GWCL cables

A 39-year-old mason, Felix Amoah, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison with hard labor for stealing copper power cables worth GH₵195,000, belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The Navrongo District Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Famous Yao Amenyo, convicted Amoah on March 14, 2025, on two counts: causing unlawful damage and stealing. However, he was acquitted of conspiracy due to a lack of evidence linking him to an accomplice.

Despite pleading not guilty, Amoah was found guilty after a full trial. The judge sentenced him to six months for causing unlawful damage and 15 months for theft, with both sentences running concurrently. Additionally, the court ordered him to pay for the stolen cables after serving his sentence.

During the ruling, the judge noted Amoah’s lack of remorse and continued denial of the charges.

Prosecutor Emmanuel Darko Nimako told the court that Amoah was arrested on October 13, 2023, alongside his wife, Azamseyam Kadou, a seamstress. Kadou was charged with aiding and abetting the theft.

Investigations revealed traces of the stolen cables leading to Amoah’s residence, with drag marks visible on his compound wall. However, after reviewing the evidence, the court acquitted and discharged Kadou.

Following the sentencing, Amoah was immediately transferred to the Navrongo Prison to begin his jail term.
