Netizens warn IGP over honorary Doctorate from Accra Metropolitan University

Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has been showered with both praise and caution after receiving an honorary doctorate degree from the Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The prestigious recognition, conferred during Accra Met’s graduation ceremony, celebrated the IGP’s outstanding leadership, reforms in community policing, and his commitment to national security. However, the honour has stirred a whirlwind of online reactions not for the accolade itself, but over the legitimacy of the awarding institution.

Shortly after the announcement, social media platforms were flooded with concerns from netizens questioning whether Accra Met is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to award such degrees.

“Before accepting any doctorate, especially honorary ones, public figures should check with GTEC. We can’t afford to let fake degrees trend again,” one user wrote on facebook.

Others echoed similar sentiments, warning that if the institution is not in good standing with GTEC, the IGP a highly respected public figure could unknowingly find himself at the center of an accreditation controversy like others who have been ordered to drop their titles.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has, in recent years, issued strong warnings to unaccredited institutions against issuing honorary degrees, calling such actions illegal and misleading.

As of now, Accra Met has not responded publicly to the questions surrounding its accreditation, and GTEC has yet to issue any statement regarding the IGP’s recent recognition.

While many continue to commend Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno for his service to the nation, others insist that institutions and awardees alike must ensure such honours are backed by legal and academic legitimacy.
