Transport fares to rise by 20% as drivers battle high costs

Commuters across Ghana will soon feel the pinch as transport fares are set to increase by 20%, starting Monday, March 17, 2025.

The Alliance of Drivers Ghana announced the adjustment on Thursday, citing unbearable operational costs fueled by rising fuel prices and expensive vehicle maintenance.

In a statement signed by General Secretary George Baffour Owusu Afriyie, the group justified the hike, noting that fuel prices have surged from GHC12.99 to GHC16.23 per liter, while spare parts, vehicle engines, and engine oil have also seen steep price hikes.

The drivers’ union expressed frustration over their struggles, emphasizing that, as self-employed individuals, they receive no government salaries and are struggling to make ends meet.

“How can we go to work and come back home with empty hands? We are not receiving pay from the government. And we are self-employed. We manage ourselves to take care of our families,” the statement read.
