A young man, believed to be in his late twenties, has been found dead in an apparent suicide at Kade, a town in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region.
His body was discovered hanging from a piece of cloth tied to a tree behind a house. Local authorities confirmed that he was a former student of Kade Senior High Technical School.
Police retrieved the body and have since deposited it at the Kade Hospital morgue for further examination. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
This incident adds to the rising cases of suicide in Ghana. Data from the Mental Health Authority indicates that 81 lives were lost to suicide in the first half of 2024, up from 48 in the same period in 2023.
Additionally, there were 543 reported suicide attempts, with most cases involving young people aged 15 to 30.
Although Greater Accra records the highest suicide cases, the Eastern and Central Regions remain hotspots for attempted cases.
Mental health experts continue to call for increased awareness and stronger support systems to address this growing concern.
