Residents of Ghana’s Upper East Region may soon breathe a sigh of relief as Alagumgube, a local non-profit organization, has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at renovating a temporary passport office in the region, a step seen as a major breakthrough in solving the region’s long-standing passport access crisis.
For years, the Upper East Region has been without a functioning passport office, compelling residents to travel long distances to Tamale, Kumasi, or Accra to process their passports. This has raised concerns over regional inequality and access to public services.
Alagumgube, known for championing grassroots development in northern Ghana, has taken the initiative to support the cadastral planning and renovation of a facility secured within the premises of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) for temporary use.
“The absence of a passport office in the region is not just inconvenient, it’s unjust. This fundraiser is a step toward equity,” said Gabriel Agambila, founder of the group spearheading the campaign.
The funds raised will go directly into renovating the space to meet the basic standards for temporary passport processing, while broader efforts continue to push for the construction of a permanent passport office in the region.
