Kelly Mensah hails Sam George’s bold move to clean up TikTok

Renowned digital media researcher and AI strategist Kelly Lartey Mensah has commended Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Sam George, for what he calls a “transformational” approach to digital governance, following the Minister’s July 3rd update at the Ghana Digital Briefing.

At the heart of the Minister’s address was a high-level meeting with TikTok’s West African Government Relations Team held on June 26, focused on platform accountability, child protection, and cultural content moderation. The initiative marks a major policy push toward cleaning up Ghana’s digital space—especially the widely used TikTok app.

“Sam George has really scored a 9/10 with his work in the sector,” Kelly Mensah told cediweb.com.

Digital Safety and Local Accountability

Minister George raised red flags over the alarming rise in explicit content circulating on TikTok among young users. To curb the trend, he outlined a series of proposed reforms:

  • Local moderation hubs
  • Age-based content filters
  • Cultural sensitivity screening
  • Fair compensation for content creators
  • Educational content promotion under the One Million Holders Initiative

“This is a turning point for our digital culture,” Mensah said. “Entrenching content regulation and safety into our national policy will protect users and make Ghana’s digital economy more sustainable.”

TikTok in Ghana: A Double-Edged Sword

With TikTok now commanding the attention of Ghana’s youth, Kelly Mensah—who is also the founder of Cedi Web Ltd.—emphasized the urgency of digital governance that balances free expression with societal safeguards.

“TikTok has gained astronomical popularity within the 18–30 age group, but without regulation, it risks becoming a source of harm instead of innovation,” he stated.

He praised the Ministry’s proactive dialogue with the platform and called for broader legislative backing to institutionalize platform responsibility.

A New Era of Digital Governance

Mensah also acknowledged the role of President John Mahama and the current NDC-led administration in giving voice to digital advocates and experts.

“This is long overdue. Ghana is finally treating digital culture as a pillar of national development,” he remarked.

With voices like Kelly’s backing Sam George’s agenda, Ghana may be on the cusp of a digital renaissance—where safety, innovation, and local values go hand in hand.
