More data, same price: Telcos begin 10–15% bundle boost across Ghana

Telecommunication companies across Ghana have begun rolling out a government-mandated increase in data bundle volumes by 10 to 15 percent, a move aimed at addressing rising public frustration over the high cost of internet services.

Effective Tuesday, July 1, mobile network operators MTN, Telecel, and AT have revised their data packages upwards, offering more data for the same prices.

The initiative, championed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, is part of a broader push to improve digital access and affordability nationwide.

According to sector officials, Telecel and AT have applied a 10% increase across their bundles, while MTN has gone further with a 15% bump.

Some of the most noticeable upgrades are in the higher-tier data plans. AT’s GHC400 bundle has jumped from 195GB to 236GB, while Telecel has drastically boosted its GHC400 offer from 90GB to 250GB. MTN, on the other hand, has reintroduced its GHC399 plan, now offering 214GB, compared to the previous 92.88GB in a GHC350 package.

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, has tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) with monitoring the rollout to ensure full compliance. “Telcos that fail to implement these changes will face sanctions,” he warned.

Telecom providers began alerting customers last week via SMS and app notifications, outlining the revised bundle structures and assuring users of better value going forward.

Industry analysts have described the move as a step in the right direction toward bridging Ghana’s digital divide, though some are calling for further reforms to tackle internet speed and quality.

The data boost marks a rare policy shift that directly benefits consumers, and many are already expressing relief on social media.
