Joseph Osei Owusu has revealed that he was initially considered as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections but declined the offer due to health concerns.
Speaking on Asetene Pa with Akoto Mansa, as monitored by Newsnetgh, the Bekwai MP disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership approached him for the role, with then-President Nana Akufo-Addo personally calling to persuade him.
“I was poised to become the running mate of the NPP, but I had to flatly turn down the offer due to my health at the time,” he said.
Following his decision, the party settled on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as Bawumia’s running mate.
The NPP later suffered a heavy defeat in the elections, sparking debates on whether Osei Owusu’s rejection influenced the outcome.
