Parliament is set to summon officials of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) following public uproar over the Commission’s recent decision to increase electricity tariffs by 2.45%, effective July 1, 2025.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, June 26, George Kwame Aboagye, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, criticized the tariff adjustment as lacking proper justification and transparency.
“We urge PURC to come out and explain to Ghanaians. I am also going to inform the Committee Chairman to summon PURC to come to the committee and explain to us. We cannot accept this. You cannot just increase the electricity tariff without any explanation,” he said.
The PURC, in a statement issued on June 25, defended the hike as part of its Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which it says is designed to ensure the financial viability of utility providers while protecting consumers from abrupt price changes.
The Commission cited several economic indicators influencing the upward review, including exchange rate fluctuations, fuel prices, and a projected inflation rate of 20.67% for the third quarter of 2025. The tariff calculation also took into account an average GHS10.3052/USD exchange rate.
