A heartbreaking road crash near Winneba Junction has claimed the lives of three schoolchildren and a taxi driver, leaving families and the entire Winneba community in mourning.
The tragic incident occurred on the Winneba–Cape Coast highway on Monday when a Toyota RAV4, with registration number GN 5505-18, reportedly attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver and collided head-on with a Hyundai Jet taxi, registered CR 748-20.
According to the Winneba Municipal Fire Service, the taxi was transporting seven pupils from Winneba to Apam when the crash happened just after the Winneba Junction.
The taxi driver died on the spot, while all seven children and an additional passenger sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. Sadly, three of the children—who were in critical condition—died in the early hours of Tuesday while undergoing treatment.
Fire Service Commander DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku confirmed that the deceased pupils were from St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School in Winneba. He described the incident as “avoidable” and attributed it to human error.
“About 70 percent of accident cases in Ghana are caused by human factors,” Adu-Roku said. “This tragedy is a painful reminder of the need for greater caution and discipline on our roads.”
The devastating crash has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better public education on road safety, particularly among private drivers on inter-urban routes.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident as grieving families and the local education community struggle to come to terms with the loss.
