Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has dismissed criticism from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the government’s 24-hour economy policy, asserting that the initiative is a serious and practical solution to Ghana’s employment and productivity challenges—not a dream.
Dr. Pelpuo responded sharply to claims by opposition figures suggesting that the policy is unrealistic and doomed to fail.
“Well, because they (NPP) have run through fairytales before, they think it is the kind of thing we are doing.
“No, this one is a real, committed response to the kind of challenges we are facing. It’s not going to be fairytale,” he stated on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, July 6, 2025,
He emphasised that the 24-hour economy is built on a well-thought-out framework aimed at creating meaningful, sustainable jobs and improving overall economic output.
“I can tell you that the 24-hour economy is not going to provide jobs that can be described as fairytales. We are determined and we are making it. We will not overlook it by the fact that it is pronouncement,” Dr. Pelpuo added.
The 24-hour economy policy, championed by the current administration, is expected to expand operations in key sectors such as health, manufacturing, transport, and retail to run around the clock—generating employment, reducing youth unemployment, and boosting GDP.
