220 former MMDCEs throw weight behind Bawumia’s flagbearer bid

A powerful coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government have officially endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The announcement followed a strategic stakeholder engagement between Dr. Bawumia and the former MMDCEs in Accra on Monday, where the group declared their “unshakable confidence” in his leadership and vision for Ghana’s future.

“After broad consultations and careful assessment of all potential aspirants, we are confident beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the most competent and unifying candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” the MMDCEs stated at a press conference.

They emphasized that their endorsement was not just a ceremonial gesture but a tactical move, underpinned by their grassroots knowledge and political experience.

According to them, 95% of the endorsers have previously served as constituency and regional executives—some with over 16 years of service within the party.

“We will harness this experience to ensure that Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates across all regions of Ghana,” they pledged.

Why Bawumia?

The group praised Dr. Bawumia’s track record, citing his role in implementing game-changing policies such as Ghana’s digitalisation agenda—including the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and Paperless Ports initiatives—which they said have modernized and formalized key aspects of the economy.

They described him as a “data-driven, visionary leader” whose inclusive and humble leadership style continues to inspire the party’s base and unify its ranks.

“Dr. Bawumia is not only a proven leader; he is a grassroots mobiliser, an inclusive strategist, and a symbol of hope for the NPP’s next chapter,” they said.

The endorsement adds to a growing wave of support for the former Vice President. Just last week, around 65 out of 88 NPP Members of Parliament also publicly backed his 2028 flagbearer bid.

With the NPP’s next presidential primary set for January 31, 2026, the former MMDCEs’ endorsement is expected to significantly boost Dr. Bawumia’s momentum as he positions himself to lead the party into the next electoral battle.
