Seidu Agongo, Businessman and Philanthropist

A viral TikTok video posted by user @gloriabby15 has triggered widespread discussion after the creator sharply criticized renowned businessman and philanthropist Seidu Agongo for donating GHC500,000 to the newly launched Mahama Care initiative.

The video, which has since been deleted, juxtaposed Agongo’s high-profile political donation with the stark underdevelopment in rural communities particularly Bongo where he hails, drawing attention to what the creator described as “misplaced generosity.”

In the post, @gloriabby15 filmed herself in front of a visibly weathered wooden structure, identified as the only mortuary serving the entire Bongo District in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

The facility lacks modern equipment and adequate infrastructure. With a population exceeding 120,000, according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Bongo relies solely on this outdated facility for all post-mortem services.

“This is the last abode for the people of Bongo,” the TikToker stated, questioning how a mortuary in such a condition could be overlooked while political campaigns receive millions.

“How can someone donate half a million cedis for political care packages while real issues like this are ignored?”

The video struck a nerve with many Ghanaians, who took to social media to express similar frustrations over what they see as the growing disconnect between political philanthropy and grassroots needs.

Seidu Agongo, known for his charitable works, has yet to publicly respond to the controversy. The Mahama Care initiative, backed by President John Mahama, aims to provide free health screenings and basic care packages to vulnerable communities—a goal many support.

Meanwhile, local residents in Bongo have welcomed the attention, hoping it will lead to tangible improvements. “If this video brings us a better mortuary or even better health infrastructure, then she has done something powerful,” a resident told this Newsnetgh.com.

The deleted TikTok may be gone from the platform, but its impact continues to ripple across Ghana’s public discourse, reigniting old questions about leadership, social justice, and the true meaning of impactful giving.
