In a significant gesture of support for the cultural heritage of the Dagbon Kingdom, Mohammed Abdul Salam, the Acting Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), has pledged GHS50,000 towards the ongoing reconstruction of the historic Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
Salam made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the palace, where he met with Ndan Ya Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon.
The donation is part of a broader effort to restore and modernize the palace, which serves as the traditional seat of the Yaa Naa and a symbol of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The Gbewaa Palace redevelopment is a key component of the Dagbon Strategic Development Plan, which aims to propel growth in various sectors, including agriculture, education, health, commerce, and sanitation.
The project also seeks to strengthen the institution of chieftaincy within the Dagbon Kingdom, reinforcing the role of traditional rulers in driving community development.
Salam’s contribution adds to a growing list of donations from various individuals and organizations committed to the palace’s reconstruction.
Notably, the GCB Managing Director, Alhaji Alhassan Farihan, donated 2,000 bags of cement, and a group of Dagbon envoys serving as Ghanaian ambassadors and consuls general contributed GHS100,000.
The redevelopment of the Gbewaa Palace is not only a physical construction project but also a cultural initiative aimed at preserving and promoting the heritage of the Dagbon people.
Once completed, the new palace will serve as a modern residence for the Yaa Naa and a center for the Dagbon Traditional Council, symbolizing unity, tradition, and progress for the Dagbon community.
