Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s public apology for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections could be the spark that revives his political fortunes, according to a political analyst.
A lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Abiire Awineyesima, has hailed the apology as a strategic and commendable act of leadership, arguing that it could not only consolidate Bawumia’s influence within the NPP but also elevate his prospects in the 2028 presidential elections.
In an interview on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM, Awineyesima said Dr. Bawumia’s decision to take full responsibility for the party’s electoral loss—rather than deflecting blame—has demonstrated maturity and accountability rarely seen in Ghanaian politics.
“With what he’s beginning to do, he’s bringing the party together, he’s taking every responsibility and this is the best way to go. And this opens a door for him. In fact, a massive door,” Awineyesima noted.
Dr. Bawumia, who was the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 elections, recently addressed party faithful in London, where he issued an unreserved apology for the administration’s missteps. He acknowledged that several policy decisions, including the controversial E-levy and regulations affecting youth betting, had cost the party support.
“We have taken stock of our mistakes,” Dr. Bawumia assured the gathering, “and we will do better if given another chance.”
Awineyesima believes this honest approach resonates deeply with both the party base and the broader electorate. “It shows that he is someone who takes responsibility for leadership failure and is ready to learn useful lessons to better advance the collective interest,” he said.
While Bawumia’s public message focused on unity and renewal, Awineyesima suggested that behind closed doors, the former flagbearer can engage party members more candidly, shedding light on internal disagreements and policy proposals that were ignored.
“He’s not selling out the party. In private, he can explain what went wrong—like the E-levy backlash or the betting restrictions—and also show he advocated for different choices,” Awineyesima explained.
As the NPP regroups and looks toward future contests, Dr. Bawumia’s combination of humility and resolve may position him as the unifying figure capable of leading a political comeback.
