Call for load shedding timetable misplaced; power generation meets peak demand – Energy Ministry

-

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has refuted calls by the Minority in Parliament for the publication of a load management timetable, stating that Ghana’s current power generation capacity is sufficient to meet national demand, even during peak hours.

In a press release issued on Monday, May 19, the Ministry described the Minority’s call as “misplaced,” insisting that there is no justification for a load-shedding timetable at this time.

“The current power generation capacity is sufficient to meet peak demand; hence, there is no basis for a load-shedding timetable at this time,” portions of the release indicated.

The release comes in response to the Minority in Parliament urging the government to release a clear and dependable load shedding timetable, citing ongoing erratic power supply affecting households, businesses, and essential services.

At a press conference, they criticised the government’s “deceptive silence” and accused the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of mismanaging what they described as an unannounced return to “dumsor.”

The release, signed by the Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Energy Ministry, Richmond Rockson, Esq. acknowledged the ongoing challenges within the power distribution system, which it says were inherited, but emphasised that both government and industry players are working diligently to resolve these issues.
