Ghana’s Dacosta Antwi Named in Tournament’s Best XI for U-20 AFCON Egypt 2025 Group Stage

-

Ghanaian central defender DaCosta Antwi has earned a significant recognition at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025, having been named by the tournament’s Technical Study Group among the standout eleven players from the group stage.

Antwi, who plies his trade with Ghanaian Premier League club, Young Apostles FC, has been a pillar in Ghana’s backline, and featured prominently in all three of the Black Satellites’ matches in Group C. Operating on the left side of Ghana’s central defence, the young defender has drawn praise for his composure, tactical intelligence, and consistency. According to the Technical Study Group, Antwi acquitted himself with distinction—showing steadiness under pressure, progressing play effectively from the back, and nullifying threats that came through his zone.

His selection as one of the top defenders in the tournament’s group phase underscores not only his individual brilliance but also the solidity of Ghana’s defensive structure, with the Satellites having conceded only one goal in the tournament so far. The 19-year-old’s inclusion will serve as a major boost ahead of Ghana’s high-stakes quarter-final clash against host nation Egypt.

Reacting to the news, Enchi remained humble and grounded. “I didn’t expect this at all. It’s an honour, but I owe it all to the team. We defend together, and we win together. I’m just doing my part,” he said. “There’s still work to do. Our eyes are on the main goal—to beat Egypt, get to the semi-finals, and book our ticket to the World Cup. That’s the real prize.”

Ghana’s quarter-final against Egypt is scheduled for Monday, May 12, at the new Suez Stadium, with kick-off set for 6:00 p.m. local time (15:00 GMT). With Antwi and his colleagues in defence, the likes of Aaron Essel, Ofori McCarthy and goalkeeper Gidios Aseako, continuing to protect the Satellites at the rear, Ghana will be hoping to extend their impressive run and inch closer to continental glory and qualification for the U-20 World Cup Chile 2025.
